A note from PTA Co-President Becky Lopes-Filho:

It's election season and that means lots of important opportunities are coming up to hear from the candidates in their own words. In the second week of school alone, there will be three different candidates' forums focused on schools.

Our City's relationship to, and support of, its Schools Department is in sharp focus and it's time for all of us, as advocates, to tune in where we can.

With a major school buildings planning process underway, a looming tax override to pay for the replacement of the Winter Hill Community Innovation School and the possibility of combining the future Benjamin Brown School and Winter Hill School communities into one building, the dire state of the federal education budget and dismantling of the Department of Education, contracting state revenues and competing budgetary pressures at the state and local levels, and threats to the safety and liberty of our immigrant students and their families, it's hard to imagine a more fraught moment to run for political office.

The heart of our Somerville community is our children.

We are an urban school district full of absolutely amazing kids from all possible backgrounds and an enormous spectrum of needs who, more than anything, need safe and equitable access to the best whole-child education we can possibly provide them.

Our voices and our visibility as concerned residents are key at this time.

Please tune in, show up, make your voices heard, and if you have the ability, vote in the preliminary election on September 16th and in the municipal election on November 4th.
