SOLAR ECLIPSE AT THE KENNEDY

Updated: Apr 3

ECLIPSE NEWSFLASH!

All Kennedy students will be getting Solar Eclipse viewing glasses funded in partnership between the Kennedy PTA and the Kennedy School! Teachers will hand the glasses out to students during classes on Monday, April 8th.

The partial eclipse will be viewable starting at 2:15PM Monday and reaching it's most covered totality (93.3%) at 3:29PM.

If weather permits, families are welcome to stay around the Tot Lot and Basketball courts and use the eclipse glasses to safely view the sun as it's covered. Be sure to supervise your students' use of the glasses and help make sure the lenses completely cover their eyes when looking at the sun. You can also do fun experiments with the crescent shadows created during the eclipse.

Important Safety Reminders:

  • The ONLY safe way to look at the eclipse is through the eclipse glasses. It is not safe to look at the sun even for a second without the glasses.

  • Do not let your child look at the sun without the lenses fully covering their eyes.

  • Stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses before looking at the sun.

  • After looking at the sun, turn away and remove the glasses filter – do not remove while facing the sun.

  • It is NOT safe to look at the sun through a phone camera or any other type of optical device, even if you put the eclipse glass lens over it. This can cause serious injury to your eyes.

  • There will be no staff monitoring the tot lot or basketball courts after 2:35 so please plan to be with your younger student if they’ll be watching the eclipse. If your older students will stay alone, please share these safety instructions with them.
